The frames are up! | Week 4
We are now 4 weeks into our 6-week projects, and week 4 has been a week of huge progression for both Vivili and Naweni! Thanks to a heroic effort from the volunteers and the villagers, both projects are now out of the ground and starting to look more like buildings!
The week in Vivili started off with 3 solid days of mixing, barrowing and pouring concrete into the trenches we had already dug. This ensured that the pine poles were secured in place, ready to receive the frames of the building, which had been completed the previous week. As in Naweni, the concrete for Vivili was kindly provided by Fulton Hogan. Once the concrete was dry, the formwork was removed and we were ready to lift the gigantic portal frames into place on Saturday.
With the help of all of the village’s strong-men, we lifted, hoisted and secured 6 of the frames in place in one day- an amazing achievement in such a short space of time! We look forward to getting the remaining 4 frames in place on Monday and reaching another milestone in the project.
The week in Naweni started off with the measuring and cutting of the pine poles with the help of Tula- The Naqaqa Giving Foundation’s contractor, who has been nicknamed the Michelangelo of the chainsaw. This allowed us to start to erect the portal frames on Wednesday. With the help of the locals, we managed to lift all 13 portal frames into place by 5pm! Another amazing and rewarding achievement.
The rest of the week saw the team cutting, drilling and nailing the remaining secondary structure into place, ready to start applying the flooring, walling and roofing at the start of next week.
After such a pivotal week in both projects, our team of volunteers spent their well-earned day off at the beach and local lagoon, soaking up the sun and replenishing their energy levels ready for another week of building.
