One more week to go! | Week 5
We’re 5 weeks into both projects, and with 1-week left to go until the volunteers depart, we’re on track to finish in time! This week saw huge progression in both projects with the remainder of the structure going in, roofing being put on and flooring being laid.
Naweni got off to a flying start and managed to complete the floor and wall cladding within 3 days. Having a floor to stand on really brings the building to life and has given the volunteers the inspiration to complete the final push to get the Naweni Kindergarten finished within the time schedule! This great progress only leaves the doors, shutters and toilet to be installed in the final week. During our time off this week, the team has spent their evenings at the beach, with volunteer Hannah even going out to the reef with one of the locals to do a spot of spear fishing!
In Vivili the team has been working hard to get the remainder of the structure finished, ready for our final delivery of flooring and walling at the end of the week. Although there is more left to be done on the larger Community Hall project, we are hopeful that we will still reach the finish by the end of next week. Our aim is to be able to sleep in the Community Hall as a group on our final night in Fiji! The locals have been instrumental in the progression of the building over the last two weeks and as they start to see the building taking shape, more and more are turning up to help us each day. On Friday, the first few roofing sheets were put on, which is traditionally a cause for celebration in Fiji. Some of the volunteers spent the night drinking Kava with the locals, enjoying the community atmosphere as we head into our final week of construction.
We would like to congratulate Hugh, Breffní and Padraic who all graduated on the 4th September from UCD whilst out here with us in Fiji! What a way to spend your big day!
