PLAYVILION CIPANAS UPDATE 1 | A BUSY WEEK
Its been a busy week here on site in Cipanas! Harry and Clarissa arrived a couple of days early to scope out the site and the local area, before Josh and the rest of the volunteers arrived on the 29th.
Our first day was spent clearing site and measuring out the foundation locations. After some digging on our original site we discovered that it was heavily water logged which would have meant laying any foundations would have been very difficult. We had to make a decision to re locate the design to another part of site where the ground conditions were more suitable, this also meant we had to do some last minute design changes.
This, however, did not set us back very much and Dave C, Lizzie, Dani, Hattie, James, Avi, Rei, Tina and Erini managed to measure and dig all 18 foundations within the day.
Wednesday was spent constructing the first of four modules, the ‘crawl space’, a small tunnel which bridges a stream between two fruit trees. By the end of the day we had managed to complete the main structure and made a start on the bamboo cladding. A hard days work was rewarded with a beautiful sunset across the mountains and rice paddies.
We have kindly been provided with food during our stay by some agricultural students that are working here as interns during their holiday. The typical indonesian diet consists mostly of vegetables and rice, with various ways of cooking tofu and tempeh- tasty, but very spicy! During our evenings, we spend our time chatting and playing good old-fashioned games such as cards, 21 and wink murder.
The next few days were spent finishing the crawl space and constructing the structure of the next module, ‘the web’, which consists of a 2mx2m raised module, filled with rope at different angles to create a webbed climbing frame within.
We spent our days off (Friday and Saturday) paragliding, quadbiking and jungle treckking. After a week of hard work building, we decided it would be a great idea to do a 6 hour treck to a waterfall and hot springs at the top of a mountain nearby... in hindsight this probably wasnt the best option! After an exhausting weekend of activities, we decided to work half a day on Sunday, to complete the web module structure and start its cladding. That evening, we were joined by Dave W, our final Cipanas volunteer as a late arrival to complete the team.
We plan to spend the next few days finishing the web module and completing the structure of our third module, ‘the stage’.
