International opportunities

CAUKIN Studio operates international development projects which aim to improve the lives of communities globally through an exchange of culture, knowledge and skills. Teams of international participants work side-by-side with local people to achieve this goal. CAUKIN's projects aren't a holiday. They are demanding but immensely rewarding and are a great way to make your world a better place, whilst providing an opportunity for personal development and a stepping stone towards future careers.

DESCRIPTION

Join us in April 2019 (13th - 26th) for 2 weeks, where we will be designing and building a human scale observation beehive pavilion at the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK. The scheme is in partnership with The B4 Project, who are working to conserve, protect and increase the population of the UK’s native honey bee, Apis mellifera mellifera.

The pavilion will display the intrinsic connection between the local plants and wildlife, specifically Apis mellifera mellifera and native Cornish flora, whilst simultaneously acting as a sculptural beacon, connecting Eden’s biomes and the Core to their new Cornish native corner. You will have a chance to explore the eden project whilst learning about design and getting stuck in with the construction of this space!

Applicants must be 18 years or older at project start date.

Application Deadline:

Applications are reviewed on the second and last Friday of every month. Earlier applications are favoured, as spaces on projects fill up quickly!

INCLUDES

  • Accommodation

  • Breakfast & Lunch

  • 24 hour support whilst at Eden

  • Education and experience in construction

  • Education and experience in architectural design

  • Free access to The Eden Project for duration of the project

DESCRIPTION

This 4 week or 8 week project, located in Ranwas, Vanuatu, will take a team of international participants to design and build with the local community. In 2015, Cyclone Pam destroyed Ranwas school, leaving the children to be taught in temporary make-shift shelters. Over the last few year, the village has managed to re-build some of the classrooms, however they are still in need of addition teaching space as well as a library and teachers office.

Our aim, during summer 2019, is to design and construct a school building that will houses a large teaching space, a teachers office, a reading space and a library book storage room which will use natural methods to ventilate and control moisture within the space, preventing the books from moisture damage.

Applicants must be 18 years or older at project start date.

DESCRIPTION

This 4 or 8 week project, located in Zambia, Africa, will take a team of international participants to design, and build with the local community. Zambia is currently one of the poorest countries in the world. Children currently leave education at a young age with limited or no qualifications, with schools often oversubscribed and in poor conditions.

Currently, Evergreen School has up to 150 students per class, making it very difficult to effectively teach the curriculum and provide enough space for students learning activities. The addition of four classrooms will reduce class size to 40 students. The design will incorporate outdoor tutoring / homework spaces as well as play structures providing opportunities for different types of learning.

Applicants must be 18 years or older at project start date.

4 WEEKS / 8 WEEKS

BULA BATIKI . Fiji

PS6C9321-2.jpg

DESCRIPTION

This 4 week or 8 week project, located on Batiki Island, Fiji, will take a team of international participants to design and build with the local community. The villagers of Batiki founded Bula BATIKI in 2015 to produce 100% organic Virgin coconut oil. Sold all over the world, Bula Batiki’s revenue is given back to the community, creating a sustainable income. Currently the villagers have a limited space to work and have taken over the village community hall.

Our aim, during summer 2019, is to design and construct a coconut oil manufacture facility, which will give the community members a place to conduct their business and produce more coconut oil and therefore generate a sustainable income for the island. This new facility will allow Bula BATIKI to obtain higher food safety standards, increasing the scope for sales around the world.

Applicants must be 18 years or older at project start date.

This 4 week or 8 week project, located in Savusavu, Fiji, will take a team of international participants to design and build with the local community. Over 400 children from Buca public high school currently assemble on a playing field in the hot sun, or rain twice a day. As a result, children have been suffering from heat stroke, fainting and fatigue - affecting their health and learning.
